JUST COME IN

We hear all too often people say, "I'm going to go to the gym first to get in shape" or "When I get in shape I'll be in".

The myth that you have to be in shape has held so many people back from experiencing all that Gung Fu has to offer. The myth that you have to be in shape first is just not true. In fact, you're going to get into the best shape of your life, both physically and mentally, as result of your participation. Remember that even the best students could not do any of the movements when they first started; everyone starts at zero and makes their way through the program.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The three things that my instructor told me when I first started nearly 20 years ago still apply today: Work hard, Stay healthy and keep a good sense of humor.

When you come in for class:

  • Have on black sweat pants and either a white or black t-shirt.
  • Don't try to keep up with the workout that we do on your very first day.
  • Allow yourself to build up the strength over time. That will prevent a lot of pain the next day!
  • Many of the movements and exercises will feel very awkward at first, whether you have (or have not( taken martial arts before.
  • Keep in mind that the people that are doing these movements, techniques, and forms that are higher rank also had a very first day. They fumbled through their first day just like you will. They are there to help you learn.
  • Do not be concerned with who is in front of you or who is in back of you in the line up. It is not a race to become a black sash; it is a race to feel confident in your own movement and your own skill outside of the school.
  • I have said it many times in class and I will say it again here: I do not care what you do inside of the four walls of the school. I mean I do care, but I don't care... What is important to me is how well you handle yourself outside of the school in a real situation. I hope and pray that you never have to use this knowledge. Should you have to, use it only in defense of yourself and for others who are unable to defend themselves. You are your brother's keeper so use the minimal amount of force needed to overcome your opponent and not an ounce more.
  • Understand that this is a martial art system. It is not a sport and there is no weight class division. The power of the technique is in the technique itself, not in the strength, size or power of the person applying it. Realize that this system is designed for people as a step-by-step program very similar to learning a new language. You have to learn your ABC's first. So do not expect to be writing novels after your first week.
